Supervised Contact Visits and Handovers

The Family Court may order that contact between an adult and child or children occur only in the presence of a responsible adult who is prepared to be physically present at all times during the visit.

This may be done, for example, where allegations have been made of some emotional, physical or sexual abuse, or there is potential for some other kind of harm.

It is usually seen to be in the child or children's best interest to have regular contact with the parent with whom they do not live. However, children obviously need to be protected and not placed in situations where there is any risk of them being harmed.

It therefore becomes necessary in some cases for orders to be made specifying that another responsible adult is present to guard against any risk and to 'supervise' the contact. This supervision role is crucial.

We have a Kit which details the following:

  • Obligations and responsibilities of a Contact Supervisor.
  • The workings for the Residential Parent or Custodian and the Contact Parent or person, to understand and work within so that the service can be successful.
  • All related costs.
